Save the Planet Saturdays: Crisco Shortening and Pie

Apple pie just like Mom makesThis series, Save the Planet Saturdays, is still in its infancy, but I am excited for its potential. As of now, the theme is to highlight food and household products that are better for the environment, and often the animals who we share it with. It might grow or alter as we move along, but that’s the fun of starting something new!

So, today we’re going to talk about pie. In truth, I’m not a huge fan, but my husband is. Very much so. And when I had been bragging about how everyone loves my Mom’s apple pie, I didn’t realize that I was setting myself up for future pie baking of my own.

But, as a vegan, there’s always the tricky step of converting a “regular” recipe into an animal-product-free version. And that’s what really surprised me when I went to bake my first pie — the recipe was already vegan! That was a pretty awesome win. And the main ingredient that I had been unsure about was Crisco shortening. It turns out it’s vegetable based, which made it really easy to cook up a pie *just* like Mom makes! No substitutions required!

So, the moral of the story is that you can save lives and eat pie. Now that’s a plan I can get behind.
