Take Action Tuesday: Cut Back on Electricity Consumption
Continuing with our theme of energy saving after yesterday’s Cut Your Energy Costs Day celebration, today’s take action tip is to cut back on your electricity consumption.
I know I can do better with this for sure. While I do tend to turn off the lights whenever I leave a room, I’m completely guilty of leaving my computer on at night or leaving the freezer open while I’m refilling the ice cube trays.
What’s really interesting to know is that appliances that are plugged in, but not in use, can drain a bunch of energy, too! They call it phantom energy and some estimate that up to 75% of your energy usage comes from this!
Other changes we can make: choose your ceiling fan over the A/C if it’s not too hot out; use LED lighting; line-dry your laundry; install outdoor solar lighting; only put cooled food in the fridge… and that’s just a few! Bigger changes also help, like going solar or properly insulating your home.
But, for this Take Action Tuesday post, let’s start with a new habit that we can do regularly to make a difference! Small changes will add up!
